The first part of The Cobra Event is about the disgusting and incredibly violent death of a girl. She goes from feeling like she has a cold to having grand mal seizures, biting her face and tongue off, and bleeding everywhere. I almost threw up. But the rest of the book so far is a pretty domestic, though exciting, explanation of the background of biological weapons and the start of investigating what killed the girl and one other man. Preston made her autopsy extremely detailed, so it was like intense pig dissection again except on a fresh, unpreserved human girl. Much more gory than any war movie/book I've ever seen. But other than that, it's super intense and excitingly fast-paced. Some parts are even funny too, in between the gore.

This sounds good. I didn't realize that Preston wrote fiction. I was curious about the plot, so I looked it up in database I use to order books. I found out that in 1999, this book was on the list: Books for the Teen Age (NYPL). I guess I named the booktalk presentation accurately, since this book did make you feel sick!
ReplyDeleteIsn't interesting how he finds ways to sneak humor in? I always thought that was cool and I bit of a relief from all the tension!
